Friends of AKIM USA provides funding for AKIM Israel. AKIM is an acronym for the Hebrew words which, translated, means "Association for the Habilitation of the Mentally Handicapped in Israel." AKIM, founded over 54 years ago, is the largest organization in Israel caring for mentally handicapped, Down Syndrome and developmentally disabled children and adults. Over 30,000 mentally handicapped and 120,000 members of their families benefit from these services. AKIM cares for all Israelis, including Christians and Moslems in need of AKIM services.

Through the creation, development and participation in events throughout the United States, the members of Friends of AKIM USA help bring awareness to the American public of the vital role that AKIM plays in keeping the hope alive for the tens of thousands of mentally handicapped living in Israel.

Early Intervention
When an at-risk infant is identified in the hospital or at home, AKIM's professionals assess the child's needs and offer support to the family.
Nurseries & Kindergartens
AKIM's professional staff of trained teachers and speech therapists help each child gain maximum independence.
Family Support
AKIM's children are provided with essential services from childhood through adulthood.
Summer Camps
Over 4,000 youngsters spend one-week segments at AKIM camps each year.
