About Us
In Hebrew, AKIM is an acronym for the “Association for the Habilitation of the Developmentally Disabled”. Friends of AKIM USA is dedicated to supporting this population.
Akim was founded in 1951 by Israeli parents to improve the State’s welfare system and enhance the quality of their children’s lives. Today, AKIM is the largest and most comprehensive provider of programs and services for the developmentally disabled — serving 30,000 children, teenagers, adults, and senior citizens throughout Israel.

Our Belief
AKIM believes that every individual, including those with a developmental disability, deserves to have rich, fulfilling lives, and access to education, housing, employment and leisure activities.
AKIM Serves:

AKIM Has an Extensive Network of:
64 Branches throughout Israel
19 Social clubs for 2000 adults
59 Sheltered workshops for 2500 adults and summer camps for 2000 teenagers and young adults
24 Group homes for 600 people
14 Apartments in regular buildings with an average of 6 residents each
There is a constant demand for new housing, upgraded facilities, imaginative programming, and emotional and psychological support.

$15 Million a year
- ► 50% allocated from Israel’s government & social security department;
- ► 50% raised from philanthropic gifts in Israel and around the world.
AKIM is part of the fabric of Israeli society. The government and the people look to AKIM as the largest and most comprehensive provider of care for those with developmental disabilities in Israel, to provide a high quality of life for a group who can be so easily overlooked.
