Legal Advocacy

The Legal Department of AKIM leads the struggle in the courts and in the Knesset for the establishment of  legally binding and equitable standards for the intellectually and developmentally disabled persons in Israel

Among AKIM Israel’s successes are:

  • Welfare Law compells the State of Israel to provide suitable housing solutions for any individual in need for such specialized (group) housing.
  • A ruling by Israel’s Supereme Court in favor of AKIM, compelled the local municipalities to provide daily transportation for persons with developmental and intellectual disabilities, to and from work.
  • Minimum wage regulations for the intellectually disabled who work in the “open market”.
  • Initiating an amendment to the legislation prohibiting employment of sex offenders in all work frames for persons with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
  • Rights utilization.

The AKIM Israel legal department is the only non-governmental  information source, providing advise, clarification and information to family members of intellectually and developmentally disabled persons regarding, inter alia, their rights, Social Security and wellfare services in their residential area.
