Friends of AKIM USA provides funding and support to AKIM Israel, the national – person centered – parents organization, caring for the intellectually and developmentally disabled persons and their families, in Israel.
Friends of AKIM USA, supports programs, services and advocacy for those with developmental and intellectual disabilities living in Israel.
Over 34,500 intellectually disabled individuals and 130,000 members of their families benefit from these services.
¨At the beginning¨ of the independent State of Israel – while the young State of Israel did not have the means and sources to provide services for the developmentally disabled people, AKIM Israel was founded by a group of parents of developmentally disabled children.
Since 1951, AKIM Israel has developed, promoted and provided services for the developmentally and intellectually disabled persons, and ensuring their welfare and their rights.
Besides providing wide variety of services and programs to the developmentally disabled persons, AKIM Israel possesses 64 branches, throughout Israel, in which parents, volunteers, social workers and other devoted and dedicated people represent the interests of the developmentally disabled persons vis-à-vis the authorities.
AKIM Israel represents all sectors of the population, irrespective of faith, ethnic background or sex.
|AKIM Israel together with the Histadrut – ”General Organization of Workers in the Land of Israel” (The “Union”) have recently joined forces to promote the integration of the intellectually and developmentally disabled persons in the labor market in Israel.|
|As part of AKIM Israel’s desire to reach a full inclusion and participation, including residential facilities, in the community, AKIM maintains and operates 33 community-based apartments, throughout Israel, housing 4-6 residents each; all apartments are located within residential areas. These apartments are targeted to those people who can live independently, with minor supervision.|
|AKIM Israel serves as guardian for more than 1,500 persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, regardless of their faith, ethnic background, age or sex|
|With the 2015 elections around the corner, AKIM Israel’s ”Election Booklet” offers information about candidates and policies, to empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities ”on their way to the ballot box.”|
